The PS5 homebrew scene has another exciting development. Developer BlackBearReloaded has released ProsperoEden, an experimental Nintendo Switch emulator designed to run directly on the PlayStation 5.
ProsperoEden is an unofficial PS5 port of the open-source Eden Nintendo Switch emulator. What makes the project particularly interesting is that it runs as a native PS5 homebrew application, rather than requiring users to boot Linux first. The PS5-specific work includes a native interface and integration with ps5-opengl. Reddit
The current release is v1.000.010 Alpha, so this should still be considered an early experimental project. Compatibility, stability and performance vary significantly depending on the game. The developer says the project currently works best with 2D and platform-style games, while demanding 3D AAA titles are not the focus at this stage. BiteYourConsole
Despite its early status, ProsperoEden already includes several impressive features: a game library with cover artwork, individual Handheld/Docked mode settings, DualSense controller support, audio, in-game saves, and a performance/diagnostic overlay. Reddit
Recent development testing has produced some promising results. Super Mario 3D World reached roughly 35–53 FPS on its animated title screen, while Metroid Dread reached approximately 59–60 FPS on its title/file-selection screens. Horizon Chase Turbo and Mario vs. Donkey Kong have also been tested. These numbers are from specific menus or title screens and should not be interpreted as guaranteed gameplay performance. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has also been tested, although the current build does not maintain 60 FPS during docked-mode gameplay. Community testing today has likewise reported the game running with unstable frame rates, and the developer says performance improvements remain in development while stability is currently a major focus. Why This Matters for the PS5 Homebrew Scene
ProsperoEden represents an important technical milestone: Nintendo Switch emulation is now being actively developed as a native PS5 homebrew application.
There is still considerable work ahead before it can be considered a mature Switch emulator for PS5, but seeing actual games booting with graphics, audio, DualSense input and saves makes this a project worth following closely.
Development testing has primarily taken place on PS5 firmware 6.02 and 12.70, according to the developer. That does not mean those are the only compatible firmwares; broader testing is being requested to establish compatibility. Reddit
ProsperoEden does not include Nintendo Switch games, encryption keys or firmware. Users are expected to provide their own legally dumped files. Reddit
